The Story
The character of Zorro was created in 1919 by the writer Johnston
McCulley for his novel, "The Curse of Capistano". And
so began the legend
of the romantic hero who fought against injustice in the town
of Los Angeles
in the Spanish colony of California. Since then, Zorro has been
the source
of entertainment for audiences worldwide.Zorro's alter ego is
Don Diego,
son of a wealthy landowner. Hidden away in his secret cave, Don
Diego
dons his outfit of black, his mask, hat, cape, whip and sword,
and reappears
mounted on his black steed, Tornado, ready to gallop his way through
the night.
Well-known throughout the town as an intellectual who condemns
violence,
no one suspects that Diego is the man behind the mask of Zorro.
The cast of characters whose lives are interweaved with that of
Zorro include
the town's military chief, Don Rafael. Zorro provokes the wrath
of the
Captain by continually escaping his clutches. The likeable Sergeant
García is a secret admirer of the hero, while Esperanza
is a lady friend of Diego's in love with his alter ego, Zorro.
Zorro's skill with the sword and whip, along with his characteristic
cunning, distinguish Zorro from other popular heroes. Driven by
a fervent desire to fight against injustice, Zorro comes to the
rescue of those in trouble. As a multidimensional ethnic legend,
it hasn't been hard for Zorro to hold on to his worldwide fame.
Three slashes in the air identify Zorro and his trademark "Z".
Wise, valiant, charming, cunning, skilful and romantic, four
separate generations have grown up with this legendary character.
Zorro owes his staying power to his innate appeal as defender
of justice and his ability to strike a chord with the spirit of
any age.
